Designed in 2012, this original illustrated map of Shoreditch and Spitalfields in east London, UK, is inspired by decorative antique map prints and is entirely hand-drawn and digitally coloured.

The design celebrates the area’s rich history and culture. Illustrations show Nicholas Hawksmoor’s Christ Church Spitalfields (1729) at bottom left and St. Leonard’s Church, Shoreditch (c.1740), at top right.

The two shields at left represent the former Metropolitan Borough of Shoreditch and the Huguenot Cross, honouring the French refugees who settled here in the 18th century and brought silk-weaving expertise.

The border decoration references the silk-weaving and furniture-making industries which once dominated the area, as well as the theatres that existed in Shakespeare's time and the fruit and vegetable market at Spitalfields.
