Designed in 2012, this original illustrated map of Angel, a neighbourhood of London, UK, is inspired by decorative antique map prints and is entirely hand-drawn and digitally coloured.
Its decoration scheme references the area's rich diversity, culture and history. The illustration at the bottom left depicts the building on the corner of Pentonville Road and Islington High Street that until 1921 was the original Angel Inn, an establishment which had existed on the same site in various forms for several centuries, and from which the area takes its name. The illustration at the top right depicts the statue on Islington Green of Sir Hugh Myddleton (1560-1631), who was responsible for the planning and building of the New River (an artificial watercourse built in the 17th century to supply the citizens of London with fresh water and flowed from Hertfordshire through north London down to its terminating reservoir or 'head' beside where Sadler's Wells Theatre is today). The coat of arms at the bottom right also represents him. The border decoration is inspired by the ornate 19th century architectural motifs that adorn the Angel building.
The map covers the area immediately surrounding Angel Underground Station and also includes parts of Barnsbury, Finsbury and Pentonville.
