This is an original illustrated map of Kensington & Chelsea, a borough of London, UK, inspired by decorative antique map prints and entirely hand-drawn and digitally coloured.
Its decoration scheme references the area's rich diversity, culture and history. The coat of arms at the top of the image is the official arms of the borough. The shields along the left and right edges represent (from top to bottom) the Ladbroke, Holland, Sloane and Cadogan families, historic landowners whom many streets and locations in the borough are still named after. The illustration at the bottom left depicts the Royal Hospital in Chelsea, the home of the Chelsea Pensioners, whilst at top right is an illustration of Kensington Palace, the home of the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge and the borough's resulting association with royalty that gives it its official Royal status. The decorative border is directly inspired by the map of Oxfordshire (c.1830) by Thomas Moule, the use of which loosely references the antiques trade of Portobello Market and the desirability and affluence of this part of the city.
