Designed in 2012, this original illustrated map of Brixton in south London, UK, is inspired by decorative antique map prints and is entirely hand-drawn and digitally coloured.
Its decoration scheme references the area's rich diversity, culture and history. The illustration at the bottom left shows Lambeth Town Hall on Brixton Hill, opened in 1908 and a major landmark in the area, and the illustration at the top left shows the Brixton Academy, a famous local music venue and former cinema on Stockwell Road. The coats of arms at the right of the image represent the three main historical landowners who in the 19th century sold their land to property developers and thus transformed the area from a rural backwater into the sprawling Victorian suburb we know today. The border decoration is partly inspired by the Art-Deco architectural motifs on the facade of the Brixton Academy.
