This is an original illustrated map of Waltham Forest, a borough of London, UK, inspired by decorative antique map prints and entirely hand-drawn and digitally coloured.
Its decoration scheme references the area's rich diversity, culture and history. The coat of arms at the left of the image are the official arms of the borough, and the shields at bottom right are (from top to bottom) the crests of the old boroughs of Chingford, Walthamstow and Leyton respectively - all three of which were united in 1965 to form the present borough. The two illustrations within the roundels at the left show views of the obelisk at Pole Hill in Chingford, and the William Morris Gallery. The border decoration is inspired by the wallpaper and textile patterns designed by William Morris, who was born and spent his childhood in Walthamstow at the house which is presently the William Morris Gallery. The shape of the border also echoes the shape of the famous tower at the now-closed Walthamstow Stadium.
