Designed in 2012, this original illustrated map of Stoke Newington, a neighbourhood in north London, UK, is inspired by decorative antique map prints and is entirely hand-drawn and digitally coloured.
Its decoration scheme references the area's rich diversity, culture and history. The coat of arms at the left of the image represent two ancient local landowners, both of which were combined to form part of the official arms of the old Borough of Stoke Newington, (abolished in 1965 and now part of the London Borough of Hackney). The two illustrations at bottom left and top right depict a view of St Mary's Parish church from Clissold Park, and the Lion public house on Church Street. The border decoration is inspired by Georgian window frame designs and further reference the architectural heritage of the neighbourhood.
Locations featured on the map include: Abney Park Cemetery, Albion Road, Clissold Leisure Centre, Clissold Park, Green Lanes, Lordship Road, Newington Green, Rectory Road, Shacklewell Lane, Stoke Newington Common, Stoke Newington Road and High Street.
