Designed in 2012, this original illustrated map of Angel, a neighbourhood of London, UK, is inspired by decorative antique map prints and is entirely hand-drawn and digitally coloured.
The design reflects Islington’s rich history and cultural heritage. At bottom left is the former Angel Inn, which gave the area its name, while top right shows the statue of Sir Hugh Myddelton on Islington Green - engineer of the 17th-century New River, which brought fresh water to London and still passes through the area. His coat of arms appears at the bottom right.
The border is inspired by the ornate 19th-century detailing of the historic Angel building.
The map covers the area immediately surrounding Angel Underground Station and also includes parts of Barnsbury, Finsbury and Pentonville.
