The Alhambra in Granada, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the best examples of Islamic architecture in Europe. Originally a Muslim-built fort in the Middle Ages, it was remodelled and expanded many times over the centuries and served as Ferdinand and Isabella's royal palace following the Reconquista in 1492. After falling into disrepair it was gradually restored over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, and is now one of Spain's most popular tourist destinations.
