The Torre del Oro (the Tower of Gold in English) in Seville has stood on the banks of the river Guadalquivir since the days of the Almohads, the Muslim dynasty that ruled most of what is now Spain during the Middle Ages. Its structure dates from the early 1220s (with later additions, with substantial repairs following the 1755 Lisbon earthquake) and was a witness to the departure of Christopher Columbus from Seville on his voyage of discovery to the Americas in 1492. Threatened with demolition near the end of the 19th century, it is now a much-loved symbol of the city and houses a small museum on maritime history.

This is a digitally-enhanced reproduction of an original pen drawing.
