Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the region of Galicia in northwestern Spain, and its cathedral is famous as a site of pilgrimage and the end point of the Camino de Santiago, a historic pilgrimage route that begins at the French border and crosses the entirety of northern Spain. Reputedly the burial place of the apostle St. James the Great (from whom the city - Sant-iago - takes its name), the cathedral in its present form was begun in the late 9th century and is a mixture of Gothic, Romanesque and later Baroque styles.
